Judge Barbara Ann Villano Holds Hearing for Bat Attack Suspect

TOMS RIVER — A state Superior Court judge noted a 37-year-old Lakewood man's history of mental illness Thursday as he faced charges of attempting to murder an Orthodox rabbi who was severely beaten with a baseball bat earlier this month.

Lee Tucker of Ventura Drive, arrested Wednesday, stood before Judge Barbara Ann Villano in the Oct. 9 attack on Rabbi Mordechai Moskowitz, 53. Deputy Public Defender Frank Gonzalez entered a not guilty plea on Tucker's behalf.

"There were concerns about the defendant's history and any mental health issues he may have had or continues to have," Villano said...

Pierce County Superior Court Judge Thomas Larkin sentences teen to 35 1/2 years in prison

On what he called “a sad day,” Pierce County Superior Court Judge Thomas Larkin sentenced a teenager once voted homecoming king to 351/2 years in prison Friday for a pair of attacks that killed a former college professor and wounded another man.

“There are no winners or losers here today. There are only losers,” Larkin said before sentencing 19-year-old Cyril Delanto Walrond to the low end of the standard sentencing range.

Prosecutor Dennis Wilenchik fired, case against New Times dropped

Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas announced Friday afternoon that he was dismissing the case against New Times and that no charges would be pursued against the editors and writers involved in the case.

Thomas also said he was dismissing special prosecutor Dennis Wilenchik, who had pursued the case on the county's behalf.

Thomas said that mistakes were made, that the case had been grossly mishandled and that he was uncomfortable with where the case had gone.
