Abbie Cuellar challenger of Judge Jeri B. Cohen caught in hail of gunfire speeds away as her car is riddled with bullets

Miami-Dade judicial candidate Abbie Cuellar was driving along a side street in Little Haiti last week when two men emerged from a minivan-type vehicle and riddled her Infiniti SUV with bullets.

She survived, but flying glass slashed her face.

''I wish I knew. I wish I knew it was a random act,'' Cuellar said this week. ``If it's something more sinister than that, I don't know what to do to protect myself.''

The shooting is still perplexing Miami homicide detectives, who on Friday were to talk with Cuellar, 45, about details of the attack.

The best theory: The gunmen were likely carjackers.

Cuellar, a family-law and child-welfare attorney who lives in the Shorecrest neighborhood, is running against Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Jeri Beth Cohen in November's election.

Judge James B. Convery to Ex-President of Hispanic Bar: "When did you become an illegal alien?"

A veteran Essex County judge's alleged in-court remark to the former president of the state's Hispanic Bar Association is yet another example of an "anti-immigrant rhetoric currently in vogue in certain circles," the association maintains in a letter to Chief Justice Stuart J. Rabner.

"When did you become an illegal alien?" was the question reportedly posed by Essex family court Judge James B. Convery to Ivette Ramos Alvarez. She has now filed a complaint against the judge with the New Jersey Supreme Court's Advisory Committee on Judicial Conduct (ACJC).

Robert Jones, Livingston Judge arrested for DWI--and that makes 3 drunk judges this week!!

Livingston Municipal Court Judge Robert Jones has been ar rested in Parsippany on charges of drunken driving.

According to an account by police, Jones, 51, was stopped at Par sippany Boulevard shortly after midnight Sunday when officers spotted a motor vehicle violation. Officers Thomas Pomroy and Brian Conover placed Jones under arrest on charges of driving while intoxicated.

Jones was transported to Parsippany police headquarters where he was administered a breathalyzer test, issued a summons, and later released to a family member.

A call to the Parsippany police chief for further details was not re turned.

Livingston Mayor Gary S. Schneiderman said yesterday that Jones reported his arrest to the mayor and another council member on Sunday.

Did I mention he was appointed to the bench by President Bush?
