Judge Jeffrey Hoskins files bankruptcy in order to pay for expensive legal defense leading to his acquittal

HILLSBORO, Ohio — A judge found not guilty in criminal trials that included charges of money laundering has filed for bankruptcy.

The Chapter 13 bankruptcy filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Ohio was made March 26 on behalf of Highland County Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey Hoskins and his wife, Maureen E. Hoskins, according to the court.

Hoskins has said that he incurred numerous attorney fees during the criminal trials in December 2006 and in August 2007.

Local attorney Randy Rumph thought he saw a pattern in which Family Court Judge Cheryl Moss was giving preferential treatment to people who had donated to her election campaign. So Mr. Rumph filed a complaint with the state's Judicial Discipline Commission. And waited for a reply. And waited.

Finally, last year, the commission informed Mr. Rumph that, "Although the commission has dismissed your complaint, it has taken what it considers to be appropriate action."

Judge Elizabeth Halverson hasn't paid her lawyer, he wants to quit

An attorney representing District Judge Elizabeth Halverson in a civil lawsuit is asking to withdraw as her attorney because she hasn't paid him.

He also cited communication problems between them.

Attorney Robert Spretnak on Thursday stated in court papers that Halverson hasn't paid him $6,213 and hasn't cooperated with him in the case.

Judge Elizabeth Halverson's hearing set for April

CARSON CITY -- The state Judicial Discipline Commission has scheduled a hearing for April into allegations that Clark County District Judge Elizabeth Halverson slept during trials, mistreated staff members and held illegal communications with jurors. The hearing is to start April 14 and last five days. It will be held in Las Vegas, but a location has not been chosen yet.
